Techniques To Keep Yourself Motivated

When you're working toward success, keeping yourself continually motivated is necessary so you will keep on working enthusiastically toward your goal. Some strategies to use include the following.

Give Yourself Material Rewards. Set yourself a goal and when you achieve it, give yourself a reward. Or if you feel down, reward yourself to experience a lift. Even something small can have a motivating effect. Symbolically, you're telling yourself 'I'm worth it' or "I can do it."

Put Up Pictures or Photographs of Objects You Want. Make a want book or want list. Then, look at this book or list from time to time, and visualize yourself getting the desired objects and using them. These objects can be very useful reminders to keep you going to achieve your goal. Also, thinking about what you want helps to plant the vision of having it in your subconscious.

Compete with Yourself. Many successful people set their own personal goals and don't worry about what others are doing. The advantage of this approach is that you work on realizing your own potential and are not held back by a concern with what everyone else is doing. Remember, everyone has his or her own plan or purpose, and to be successful, you should focus on achieving your own goals.

Review the Success of Others. Read the biographies of successful men and women. Notice the obstacles they had to overcome and the techniques they used to attain success. You will be able to identify with the experiences of many of these people, and their efforts to gain their goal will inspire you to work toward your own. Also, their stories will give you models to emulate and ideas you can apply in your own efforts toward success. While supersuccessful salespeople might serve as one model (such as the insurance man who made the million-dollar-a-year roundtable or the distributor who made $100,000 on his last month's check), the models you choose can come from any field where they are a suc-cess. So artists, writers, financiers, public leaders, top-flight teachers—just about anyone who has gained the top in anything—can be a source of inspiration to you.

Motivate Yourself by Motivating Others. People who teach or lead others know this principle works. They may not feel like teaching or leading that day, but they must do it. Then, as they perform in that role, the excitement and enthusiasm of others wears off on them, and soon they are feeling motivated again. So, find ways to motivate others to per-form, and you'll find these efforts are self-motivating, too.

Start now! Don't wait. The sooner you act, the sooner you'll reach your success goals. And if you procrastinate, you may find one excuse after another so as not to begin: 'I'm not ready," "I need more information," "I have to think about things for a while."

Sometimes, of course, it is necessary to weigh alternatives and make decisions. But watch that these concerns don't become excuses that interfere with action, because you'll never be as ready as you would like to be or have as much information as you want. In addition, you can always weigh more alternatives.

However, you can learn more and improve your decision-making abilities as you act and just like actors find, when you start acting, any stage fright you feel before doing so goes away. So if you need to do so, take some time to make a reasoned decision about what to do. But then, acti Qo for it! You may be nervous. You may make some mistakes. But we learn through acting, and the nervous-ness goes away. So make a decision and do it now! Or affirm you have become the person you want to become.

Doing so can help you succeed because it accomplishes two things. First, you remind yourself of your goals and so remotivate yourself to achieve. Second, by seeing yourself as having already achieved these goals, you put that thought into your subconscious or reinforce thoughts about this that are already there. Then, since your subcon-scious has power to actualize what is deeply etched in thought, your thoughts will eventually be manifested in action, if you think them long and hard enough.

Whatever your success goals, concentrate on their coming to pass. To affirm them, write them down and review them—at least twice a day—and when you do, say them over and over to yourself. Get relaxed, close your eyes, and visualize yourself as you want to be. Visualize having attained what you want. And most important, imagine that your success is happening now! You have achieved it and are experiencing and living it now! This way you imagine and affirm your success the way you want it to be.

Two ideal times to do this are in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to bed. These are normally quiet times when you can be alone, and at these times, your subconscious is particularly receptive, for you can put aside the cares of the day and relax.

In fact, you can make this a very special time to reinforce the reality you are creating with your mind. For example, you might go to a special place or sit in a special chair when you imagine your success. Perhaps to create a more intense, contemplative mood, you might light a candle or turn on some soft music. Then, whatever setting you create, devote five to ten minutes to making affirmations actively and seeing your goal accomplished.

Also, you might try making affirmations with members of your sales team, since the group effort will provide further reinforcement for each of you, as well as bring you closer together to create a better functioning team. One way to do these group affirmations is to set aside a small part of a group meeting for this purpose. Then ask everyone to relax, close their eyes, and imagine having attained a personal goal.

Another way to use affirmations, if you are artistically inclined, is to draw some pictures of yourself achieving the goal you want. Or you might create a collage from magazine photos. Then, as you draw or look at these pictures later, the images will reinforce your conviction you are going to achieve your goal.
