Putting Your Emphasis In The Right Place—On Product Sales

Whether you are selling to the ultimate customers or building a sales team, too, always emphasize product sales.

This statement may seem self-evident when you are selling direct yourself. But some people lose sight of this principle when they seek to build an organization of MLM or network-marketing distributors, since the big success in these programs comes from building a large group. So they focus almost exclusively on creating such a group.

But, initially, whatever kind of program you are marketing, you must work on promoting and selling the product itself, because that's the only way anyone makes any money—through product sales because commissions are only paid for that. Then, once the focus on selling the product is properly emphasized, create a sales team and look for key distributors who will likewise focus on marketing and promoting the product while building a sales team too.

The reason for this emphasis on product is that whether you personally sell the product or have a sales team working with you, you and/or your group must move the product. It also helps if you or your people actually like and consume the product. Some distributors who are interested only in the business opportunity are very effective because they are able to tap a large market for the product among others. But one risk of going after distributors who are mainly interested in business is that you may build up a big organization but not move much product, because no one is using it.

So emphasize product sales, whether you are appealing to prospects as consumers, as business opportunity seekers, or both. The product should be in the forefront of what you are selling—not just building an organization to sell it. It's like style and content in a presentation, gas and a steering wheel in a car. You need to have both working together to get where you want to go.
