Major Strategies

The distributors who have turned consumers into distributors use most of these strategies:

• They use the product themselves and are highly enthusiastic about it.

• They use every opportunity to talk up their product and they slip it into the conversation in a casual, informal way by describing it as something that turns them on or can help someone else.

• If the product lends itself to free samples, they give these out and ask the person to call them to report the results, or they call a few days later to follow up.

• If they advertise or use other promotional techniques, they push the product only, although they may indicate there is a business opportunity, too. But they mention the business only as an aside and focus on getting the person to try and use the product.

• They have some product on hand to supply the needs of their retail customers, and they order it for their customers, as needed.

• They not only supply their customers with product but they help them use it successfully. Such assistance is especially important with health or high-technology products, for consumers can easily use the products incorrectly and hence feel dissatisfied or frustrated.

• They invite people to product meetings or demonstrations to get more information on how to use the product and why it works the way it does.

• Once the consumer seems sold on the product they explain that he or she can purchase the product at wholesale by signing a distributor agreement.

• They also tell the consumer that he or she can make money just by telling other people about the product. Then, if the consumer is interested they invite the person to a business opportunity meeting or make an individual presentation.

• If the consumer decides to become a distributor, they continue to support and train that individual, just as they would any other distributor.
