Knowing Your Company

Besides knowing about its products, you should also be knowledgeable about the organization and management of any company you represent. You should have gained some of this information when you were deciding what products or services to market, and now you should make yourself even more familiar with the company so you can convincingly talk about it to others.

You can get much of this information from company literature, but if you truly get serious about the product line, a visit to company headquarters might be in order. Meet the management personally and look over their offices. Take a tour through their factory. You'll feel more solid about the company, and you will convey this confidence to your cus-tomers and to anyone on your sales team.

Some of the key areas to investigate include:

• Who are the company officers? What kind of professional background do they have? What is their track record in other business ventures, if any?

• How long has the company been in business?

• What is the company's sales volume? How fast is its sales volume growing?

• How many distributors does the company have now?

• How fast is its distributor network growing?

• How prepared is the company to handle growth?

• How open is the company to making information available about itself and its officers?

• Is the company a member of professional or trade associations in its field? Is it listed with local business agencies, such as the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau? And if so, what is its record?

• Has the company filed the necessary business and legal documents to do business in the states where it is operating?

• How has the company arranged to handle its computer records? (Some use a computer service; some keep track of computer records internally.) Does the company have a good record for paying out commissions accurately and on time?
