Creating Effective Brochures, Fliers, And Posters

In order for your brochures, fliers, and posters to be effective, they must look good. They must be eye-catching, inviting, and look as if a solid professional organization is behind them. Of course, hiring a professional to design your materials can help. But you can still do a credible, professional-looking job yourself with a limited investment (under $25) and some graphic aids—tools anyone can use.

First, in writing and organizing your copy follow the same principles used in advertising.

• Don't try to say too much on the same brochure, flier, or poster.
• Focus on a few key points.
• Use a different size or type of letter to highlight major ideas.
• Leave plenty of blank space around your copy, so it is easy to read.
• Break up your copy into brief paragraphs to encourage readability.
• Ask for some action, such as

Come to a particular event (list date, time, place, cost, and indicate if a reservation is necessary).
Call to ask for more details.
Call to attend a business opportunity meeting.

Second, use the basic principles of graphic design to create an attractive, inviting look. And if you're not an artist, use the graphic aids to be discussed. To get this professional look, do the following:

• Use bold, eye-catching headlines that convey your key message in a few words.
• Use type or lettering that has the appropriate feel for your message. (For example, use solid, conventional lettering to describe a business opportunity, free-flowing unusual lettering to convey a feeling of fun.)
• Use a picture or two to make the flier look more lively.
(You can buy predrawn clip-art books where you just cut out the art and paste it on your copy if you aren't an artist yourself.)
• Use a good-quality typewriter or computer with a letter-quality printer (and if you have proportional spacing, so much the better).
