Following-Up After The Meeting

To maximize the power of your speaking engagement, follow-up with the leads you have obtained within a week or ten days after the meeting. Mow use the usual follow-up techniques discussed in previous chapters.

In addition, follow-up with the program director to help build your reputation as a speaker. Within a few days, call to thank the program director for inviting you, or send a thank you note for this. Also, ask the program director, either in your call or letter, to provide you with a reference letter about your talk. Explain that you would like to be able to include this in your portfolio, and possibly use the program director's name or the group's name in your list of groups or organizations you have spoken to. Many program directors will be very glad to do this—especially if you have spoken at no charge or for a small honorarium. It's their way of providing you with some compensation for doing the program.

If the program director is busy, offer to draft a letter yourself, for his or her approval. If possible, get the program director to put any correspondence on the organization's own letterhead. But if it is not possible to do this and you do get the director's agreement to use a quote or the name of the group as a reference, just write this up yourself and use it in your list of credits or quotes like this.

These letters and quotes or credits will help to build your reputation as a speaker, and you can use them to help get engagements for larger and larger groups, as well as getting paid or getting more money for what you do.
