for their Mustang tuning meant it was only natural for Saleen to offer
a performance version of Ford's Explorer, especially so because SUVs were
becoming so popular in the late 1990s. It was 1996 that the first one
appeared and in this they used the former Mustang pushrod 5.0L engine.
Saleen launched their new version in 1998 and concentrated on giving it
enhanced driver appeal and making it more dynamic visually. The separate
steel chassis and live axle were retained, but stiffer bushes were fitted
throughout the suspension, plus the springs were both lowered and uprated
and the shocks revalved. Thicker anti-roll bars replaced the stock units,
and thanks to lightweight magnesium 18-inch (457 mm) rims and low-profile
tyres, the car could pull an astonishing 0.80g on a skidpad. The body
was fitted with a Saleen styling kit, and optional was a supercharger,
which this one has.
