ROVER P5 (1967-1973) CAR HISTORY

Car review on ROVER P5

There was nothing to replace the Rover P5 as a ministerial barge when production stopped in 1973. No other British car being built in the 1970s had the same air of solid worth and self-effacing dignity. They were still doing sterling service when Margaret Thatcher arrived in Downing Street in 1979 to begin her 11-year tenure. The elderly saloon was held in such esteem that a batch of the last cars were kept in storage and used for high-ranking cabinet duties well into the 80s. For years they were a regular feature for news bulletins, sweeping into Parliament and Buckingham Palace or pulling up outside No. 10. Harold Wilson had a special ash-tray fitted to his to cater for his pipe. Even the Queen had a 3 ½ -liter saloon: rumor has it that it was her favorite car and that she could often be seen driving it around Windsor.

Dispensing at last with the separate chassis of the P4, the three-liter of 1958, or P5 (post-war design number 5), was a Rolls-Royce for the middle classes. With modern but dignified styling by David Bache and a traditional interior with African cherry wood on the dash, thick Wilton carpet under foot and leather almost everywhere else, this was an Edwardian drawing-room on wheels, perfect for the power brokers of the 60s.

At first, nobody really minded that the three-liter, joined by a hunch-roofed coupe version in 1962, was a bit slow, its soothing refinement being all that was asked of it by most owners. By the mid 60s, however, mere gravitas was not enough. Even on the gravel drives of leafy suburbia, the corpulent three-liter's lack of urge - it struggled to reach 100 mph (160 kph) as an automatic — was becoming embarrassing. Enter the Buick V-eight engine, a left-over from General Motors's brief flirtation with "compacts" in the early 60s and acquired by Rover as an end-of-line bargain in 1966. Packing 184 bhp (the last three-liters gave 134), it was a perfect fit under the P5's bonnet. It gave this stately boardroom barouche - renamed the 3'/2-litre in 1967 - speed and a new lease of life.

Suddenly the P5 was the car it always should have been. With a reasonable price tag Rover could barely keep pace with demand, which remained strong until its death in 1973.
