LOTUS 7 (1957-1970) CAR HISTORY

Car review on LOTUS 7

Although the first production Lotus was the Six of 1953, sold as a kit and intended for use in club racing, it was the now-legendary Seven of 1957 that put the fledgling company on the road to success. A skimpy and extremely basic two-sealer, the new car had a cleverly designed multitubular space-frame chassis with a stressed aluminum body making no concessions to access for the driver and passenger: there were no doors, just cutaway sides, and if the hood was up it was nearly impossible to get in. Minimal mud-guards covered the front wheels and the headlights were free-standing.

There was coil-sprung independent front suspension and a well-located live rear axle with radius arms and coil spring/damper units, which produced superb handling. Straight-line performance depended on the engine filled by the owner: most went the Ford route will] a side-valve 100E unit; a few used the Coventry Climax FWA engine and some late S1s had the BMC A Series unit. The space frame was simplified on the S2 of 1962, which could also be recognized by its flared clam-shell wings.

The Super Seven, available from 1961, came with a series of progressively more powerful engines: a Cosworth-tuned 1340cc Ford Classic unit and, later, a bigger 1498 Cortina GT or Cosworth 1599cc engine. Disc brakes appeared on the front for the first time. The S3 car used a 1600 Cortina engine, although 15 had a Lotus twin-cam engine of the type fitted to the Elan. Attempting to bring the concept up to date - and take some of the Midget/Spitfire market - the Seven S4 of 1970 had a chunkier-looking glassfibre body bonded on to a modified chassis with Europe Type front suspension and a Watts linkage at the rear.

It was softer and more civilized than the earlier cars and hard-bitten Seven enthusiasts didn't take to it, yet it sold respectably - more than 900 cars in three years.

With the arrival of value added tax (VAT) in 1973, Lotus decided to bail out of the kit-car market altogether and sold the design rights to Catherham Cars who build the car in S3 form to this day.
