other Ford produced in the 1960s, the 1961 Galaxie range was huge in every
respect. The Sunliner topped the range and was over 79 inches (2 m) wide.
It ran nothing radical on the separate chassis, but it did use ideas developed
during NASCAR racing to transform the suspension and handling of the car.
The body has a minor facelift for this use with a concave grille and stylish
single side crease which developed into horizontal fins at the rear. There
was a detachable hardtop roof available for the Sunliner, but most opted
for the electric folding top. Even in base form the Sunliner had a 300
bhp (224 kW) V8, but buyers could opt for the Police Interceptor tune
which had 401 bhp (299 kW) and pushed the car under seven seconds in the
0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint. In the rapidly changing motor world of the
early 1960s, the new car lasted but a year before getting a redesign.
