Ferrari
Car Design History - Automobile manufacturer
Shiny red metal, an aggressive radiator grill, and the
famous bucking-horse logo are the images that come to mind when one hears
the name Ferrari. And, of course, speed. Since the company
was founded by Enzo Ferrari, a former race car driver,
after the war, its cars have won more than 5,000 racing trophies. Ferrari's
very first model, the twelve-cylinder 125 of 1946, became a benchmark
for all sports cars that followed it. Unabashedly sexy in their design,
Ferraris came to be used as symbols of erotic power in countless movies
and TV series, from Miami Vice to Magnum, P.I. Their aura was not based
on mere looks but on Ferrari's superior engines and the enormous success
of its racing teams. Body design mattered, of course, and the cars' power
was translated by Pininfarina into aerodynamic lines
and sharply contoured details. In the 1950s and 1960s, rounded, organic
forms characterized models such as the 250 GT SWB, the 250
GTO (dubbed a "phallus on wheels"), and the 365 GTB/4 "Daytona."
The cars became more angular in the 1970s. The only lapse in Ferrari's
otherwise immaculate styling was the flashy Testarossa, now considered
a symbol of the excesses of the 1980s.
