The Z1 was a curiously un-BMW-like product, but enthusiasts everywhere were thankful that the company had the courage to put it into production. BMW was used to making drivers' cars, for sure, but its tendency was always toward the conservative. The Z1 was radical and highly specialized.

The project began life as a development mule for a new type of suspension for the BMW 3 Series. BMW Technik - the company's technical wing, mainly responsible for research and development — designed a body for it that was meant to show BMW was ahead of the game. It was displayed at the 1986 Paris Salon as a pure concept car, but the public response was so overwhelming that BMW boss Eberhard von Kuenheim gave the go-ahead for a production run.

After a series of modifications, the production Z1 was ready in 1988. Its basis was a steel monocoque chassis fitted with a composite thermoplastic body. Immense strength was engineered in by keeping very high sills, which raised a question about the doors; BMW solved this little conundrum by designing doors that dropped away into the sills, operated by electric motors - great for fine-weather motoring. Aerodynamics was a strong point, and one novelty was a rear silencer (muffler), which also acted as an aerofoil.

The Z-axle rear suspension was the prototype of that for the forthcoming 3 Series, and gave great handling. The chassis could have handled more power than BMW gave it (the standard 325; engine was installed) but there was no questioning the fun factor. Equipment was deliberately sparse but the price tag was distinctly up-market: the Z1 cost the same as a BMW 735i, and was only ever a very limited-production prospect.
