Two Bunch Palms / 2*
67-425 TWO BUNCH PALMS TRAIL, DESERT HOT SPRINGS; 760/329.8791
Water is precious enough in the desert, but when it rises—full
of minerals—at a temperature of 148 degrees from deep in the earth
into an oasis of palm trees, you have the makings of a classic hot springs
spa Only guests have access to the almost 60 acres of landscaped grounds.
Accom-
modations are 45 casitas scattered throughout the lawns, linked by path
ways and furnished with antiques and rattan. The property is exceedingly
quiet and private. You can choose either a simple resort stay or an immersion
m the spa's full program of massage treatments, sauna, mud-baths and body
wrap treatments. Serenity is the watchword here; in the mineral hot springs,
even conversations among guests are kept to a whisper. And what springs!
Landscaped for a grotto effect, the pools are rock-lined, rambling organic
forms nestled amidst the palm trunks for an absolutely magical experience.
Resort or spa packages can include meals, treatments and even "romance"
treatments, which feature side-by-side massages Roman tub baths by candlelight,
and private mud- and sun-baskings on a sundeck. Nude sunbathing is encouraged
in special private "sun bins" When guests want a bit more activity,
they can play tennis (two courts), work out in the exercise pool, walk
trails around the property, or ride a bicycle. The Casino Dining Room
features "Living Essence Cuisine," and although the name is
somewhat egregious, the low-fat, "strictly fresh" fare is excellent.
Curiously, the restaurant has a full bar and good selection of wines,
so alcohol didn't make the no-no list. Meals are included in rate packages,
and a two-night minimum is required. $$$-$$$$; AE,MC, V; no checks; www.twobunchpalms.com;
