Beach House at Hermosa Beach / 3*
1300 THE STRAND, HERMOSA BEACH; 310/374-3001 OR 888/895-4559
Your every need is addressed at this chic and luxurious new hotel, which
is more akin to the historic Surf & Sand beach club that once stood
on this spot than to the motels further down the Strand. Sporting a Cape
Cod style with white wood accents and stylish beige furnishings, the Beach
House frequently draws comparisons to L.A.'s Shutters on the Beach—but
it's only about half the price. Most rooms have at least a partial ocean
view; the very best are just inches away from the Strand, with an unobstructed
view of the pier, Palos Verdes, and the entire Santa Monica Bay. Completed
in 1998, the hotel is a breath of fresh air, from the stylish furnishings
evoking a classic California beach cottage to the gracious staff, whose
respectful but casual attitude make it as suited for beach-loving families
as Fortune 500 CEOs. Each of the 96 rooms is equipped with a queen sleeper-sofa,
complete micro-kitchen (plus dishes and flatware for four), elevated king-bed
sleeping niche, plush down comforters and flannel robes, and mood-enhancing
stereo/CD player. You're always within arm's length of one of the four
phones, and business travelers will find an ergonomic computer space with
good lighting, dataport, and handy outlets. The bathroom is a study in
relaxation, with clean white tile and chrome lines, extra deep soaking
tub, and pampering Aveda products. In the morning, a generous continental
breakfast is laid out downstairs, with to-go trays if you prefer yours
on the beach or your private balcony. Room service is available from Strand
fixture Good Stuff, and beach toys and towels are provided. Despite the
summertime carnival atmosphere of the Strand, the Beach House keeps serene
with double-paned windows and "quiet" walls; packages are available
with spa or romance themes. $$$$; AE, DC, DIS, JCB, MC, V; checks OK;
