LODGINGS
White Horse Estate Bed and Breakfast Inn / 2.5*
330 LAS LOMAS ROAD, DUARTE; 626/358-0798 OR 800/653-8886
Ranch-style gates emblazoned with white horses lead the way to this Queen
Anne-style inn set amidst an acre of gardens on a quiet residential street
in the Duarte foothills. Once the home of the Maddock ranching family,
the turn-of-the-century house was restored and con-
verted into a five-room bed and breakfast in 1994. Today, fancifully filled
with Victorian antiques and period furnishings, it offers a quiet, easily
accessible country getaway. Accommodations include the Bridal Room, with
a fireplace, a cozy sitting room, and an antique vanity that's perfect
for primping brides on their way to take the plunge; the Honeymoon Suite,
located in an octagonal tower and featuring a claw-footed bathtub
W for a little post-nuptial soaking; the Rose Room, decorated with floral
designs and offering views of the garden; the Garden Room, with hand-
painted floors, a personal library (including an impressive Victor Hugo
collection), and a balcony overlooking the inn's vast grounds; and the
Celestial Room, an almost-spiritual retreat decorated with cherubs. Cen-
tral air-conditioning and a private bathroom in each room make a stay
here that much more soothing. Mornings begin with a hearty complimentary
breakfast, which includes home-baked goods, fruit, and egg dishes, served
in the formal dining room or on the sunny glass-enclosed
veranda. Afternoons are passed with a leisurely complimentary tea service.
