LODGINGS
Safari Inn / 1*
1911 W OLIVE AVE, BURBANK; 818/845-8586
Used as the exterior location for Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette's
hideaway in True Romance, this cool retro motel recently underwent a complete
renovation, though its Deco neon sign welcoming visitors remains intact.
From the outside, the two-story lodging may look like
your basic motor lodge, but thanks to its recent gutting, everything inside
the 55-room motel is brand-spanking new—from paint and bathroom
fixtures to mattresses and the contemporary furnishings. Guest rooms are
fairly small, but wrought iron and upholstered headboards with a
David Hockneyesque red, green, and blue design and colorful framed prints
of the same pattern create a lively, IKEA-like atmosphere. Several of
the rooms have a small kitchenette and wet bar. Guests can take a dip
in the tiny pool that sits in the middle of the motel's parking lot, or
soak up the Southern California sunshine on a rooftop sundeck above the
front office. There's no restaurant, but breakfast, lunch, and dinner
are available via room service from the Olive Bistro, located next door
at the Safari Inn's sister property, the Anabelle Hotel (2011 W Olive
Avenue;
818/845-7800). The small eatery's classic bistro fare runs the gamut from
sandwiches and salads to roasted chicken and steaks. $$; AE, DC, DIS,
MC, V; no checks; between Buena Vista and Victory Blvds.
