Belgian Waffle Works / 1.5*
28200 HWY 189, SUITE E I 40 (DOCKSIDE), LAKE ARROWHEAD VILLAGE;
909/337-5222
Even the wait here is pleasant. Crowds of hungry diners line the benches
overlooking Lake Arrowhead, watching the classic motor launches come and
go from neighboring docks. Once inside, you can dig into one of 15 different
styles of waffles, from the classic thick Belgian sugar-dusted favorite
to exotica such as a Brussels Belgian stuffed with ham, Swiss cheese,
and turkey and fried Monte Cristo style. Many of these variations are
a complete sugar rush: piles of strawberries, bananas, spiced apples,
peach Melba, and whipped cream conspire to turn the most innocent breakfast
into dessert. Owners Bob and Mary Baker pride themselves on
the crispiness of their waffles, and for a long time, they've been tinkering
with the batter recipe in search of ever-lighter confections. Your only
disappointment might be the thin and rather tasteless "maple"
syrup. Eggs, bacon, and omelets are also available. Lunch fare includes
a wide variety of sandwiches, fish and chips (called a "Belgian Basket"
here), and a strong selection of heart-healthy salads (to prepare you
for a waffle dessert, no doubt). Waffles are served all day, so feel free
to segue from breakfast to lunch without missing a caloric beat. A seat
on the large out door patio is worth the extra wait on a sunny day, unless
the wind's kicked up across the lake. $; MC, V; checks OK; breakfast,
lunch every day; beer and wine; reservations accepted for 6 or more; thebww@
aol.com; on the water front promenade opposite the tour boat docks.
