Lake Arrowhead

The drive "up the hill" on Highway 18 to this crystalline blue lake in the pines is worth the trip alone (the lake is 90 minutes from Los Angeles). Roadway engineers conquered the mountain-side's precipitous flanks with a series of close-to-the-ground bridges, making the route look like
a toboggan run. At the summit, follow Rim of the World Drive toward Lake Arrowhead, a stretch with views of Orange County's Saddleback Mountain rising from a white sea of coastal cloud cover like a breaching whale. Most travelers to Arrowhead go past the Blue Jay turnoff and take Highway 173 to descend into the forested bowl containing the lake and LAKE ARROWHEAD VILLAGE. (Take note ofthe Blue Jay turnoff, however, for that's where you'll find most of the area's nontourist stores and services, which can be indispensable to anyone renting a cabin with a kitchen.) Most tourist activity centers around Lake Arrowhead Village, a
shop-and-restaurant complex that borders a south cove of the lake.
Entering the Village, you're immediately confronted by garish real estate signs (the hills are alive with the sound of ... carpenters' saws) and, on the weekends, too many cars prowling for too few parking spaces. But don't dismiss Lake Arrowhead completely: this is a stunning lake, and
the twisting residential roads yield some interesting lodging possibilities at out-of-the-way bed and breakfasts. A street map is essential if you venture off the lakefront by car into these neigh-borhood streets that are as "tangled as angleworms in a bait can," as mystery writer Raymond
Chandler might have put it (he featured Lake Arrowhead in his novel Lady ofthe Lake). You can pick up a free detailed map at Holiday Realty (291 Highway 173, on the right as you enter the village; 909/337-6122). Walking along the lakefront promenade in the village is pleasant, but
to see the area's beautiful private lakefront homes, you'll need to take to the water. Two interesting TOUR BOATS ply the lake. The Arrowhead Queen encloses passengers in a Victorian riverboat-style white salon, and the Lake Arrowhead Princess is a Hackercraft wood runabout with deep seats set inside a sleek aerodynamic mahogany-planked hull and deck.
