Big Bear

Despite its popularity with travelers anxious to escape the pace of city life in the Los Angeles basin, Big Bear will puzzle and probably appall the first-time visitor seeking mountain respite. No one "minded the store" here when it came to sensible town planning, sign control, or any other
environmental concern over the last 75 years. Consequently, the south shore of this large lake has grown into a hodgepodge of crowded together tourist ventures that rivals South Lake Tahoe in tackiness—all that's missing are a few casinos. Private cabins nestle off Highway 18, but
unless you own one (or rent one), we can't recommend spending your precious vacation time on the south side. The NORTH SIDE of Big Bear is another matter. Far less populated, it has only one "town"—the cross roads of Fawnskin. A new DISCOVERY CENTER ('A mile west of Big Bear Ranger Station on Highway 38, 41397 N Shore Drive; 909/866-3437), operated by San Bernardino National Forest, provides any number of suggestions for hikes, Jeep treks, horse-back rides, fishing, and visits to volunteer-staffed lookouts atop nearby peaks. It's also the western terminus of a bike trail along the lake edge back toward Big Bear City. This is also a good place to pick up an Adventure Pass, which must be displayed on any car parked at a National Forest trailhead.
