LODGINGS
Bun Boy Motel
72155 BAKER BLVD, BAKER; 760/733-4363
Popular with European travelers on their way to Death Valley as well
as gamblers heading for Vegas (or returning, in victory or in defeat),
Bun Boy is one of those classic little American motels (20 rooms, one
story) from the days before the nationwide chains. Rooms are clean, inexpensive,
and plain. There's no pool, but you can go across the street to swim at
Wills Fargo, which belongs to the same owners. The name Bun Boy comes
from the affiliated 24-hour cafe next door. $; AE, DIS, MC, V; no checks;
Baker Blvd exit from 1-15 north.
Wills Fargo Motel
72252 BAKER BLVD, BAKER; 760/733-4477
Talk to Bakerites and they'll tell you this is the "new" motel
in town. It has a small wing that was added back in the early '90s, bringing
the total number of rooms to 30. Rates differ slightly between the two
sections, primarily because the older wing has queen beds and showers
only, while the new has king beds and tubs/showers. (You're livin' now!)
But it's essential to know about this basic, clean place to stay, for
Baker's motels fill up fast on weekends. Most important. Wills Fargo (named
for an owner named Will) has—drum roll, please—a 10-foot-deep
pool. Baker gets hot, hot, hot every summer, and this little oasis can
be a godsend. $; AE, DC, DIS, MC, V; no checks; Baker Blvd exit from 1-15.
