With an elegance (and a price) that comes dangerously close to being out of place in this unpretentious town, the newest holding in the wine- country dynasty of Fess Parker prides itself on state-of-the-art pampering. The first thing Parker did after taking over the former Los Olivos
Grand Hotel was to inaugurate a deluxe spa featuring French Sea Spa treatments that use ocean products such as seaweed, algae, and mud in a variety of exfoliating and soothing therapies. Each of the spacious guest rooms is luxuriously appointed, with a fireplace, oversize bathroom
(some have Jacuzzi tubs), wet bar, and cozy down comforter. A turn down fairy leaves Godiva chocolates on your pillow. The inn's decor conjures up the tasteful French country home of a Parisian dignitary. Staying in the main building makes you feel more like a country-house guest, but the annex across the street has easier access to the heated outdoor swimming pool and whirlpool. A warm lobby/sitting room woos guests with its fire roaring in the main hearth; there's also a quiet cocktail lounge and a pretty back garden often used for weddings or small luncheons.
Parker brought in some culinary heavy hitters for the inn's restaurant, The Vintage Room, a polished spot that wouldn't be out of place in one of L.A.'s or San Francisco's choicer hotels. Breakfast and lunch are both a notch above average, but chef Calvin Francis—formerly with the
Ojai Valley Inn—pulls out the stops with dinner entrees like pan-seared venison medallions atop a couscous flan accented with Asian pear-molasses chutney, or herb-crusted halibut alongside Dungeness crab dumplings bathed in tamari-ginger jus. Starters can be even more intriguing, with choices like pan-seared scallops glazed with pinot noir served atop potatoes whipped purple with beets; grilled quail with spinach-goat cheese stuffing drizzled with aged balsamic; or venison
