Nearly everyone puzzles over the unconventional syntax of the name of this highway mainstay whose familiar billboards—and far-flung franchises—dot Southern California. Shouldn't it be "Andersen's Pea Soup"? Opened in 1924 by Anton and Juliette Andersen as a little roadside cafe, the original restaurant was called Andersen's Electrical Cafe in honor of its newfangled electric range, but it was soon renamed for Juliette's specialty, which was gaining statewide popularity. And what about those trademark pea-splitters? The cartoon pair of workmen wielding hammer, and chisel were originally drawn for a magazine feature depicting "little-
known occupations," but were licensed to Andersen's in 1946, who then held a contest to name them. The winning names: Hap-Pea and Pea-Wee.
You can pose outside the chain's original restaurant with your face filling a cutout of one of the two (kids love this). Except for what could be in the running for the world's largest restaurant gift-shop, Andersen's itself is simply a familiar coffee-shop kind of place where split-pea soup is always on the menu.
