Mona Lisa Smile

2 hrs. 05 min. 1953 America was a time ripe for change for women and when Katherine Ann Willis (Julia Roberts) arrives to teach Art History at Wellesley College, she finds the institution drowning in outdated mores. While the nation struggles with the fears that accompany a shifting political culture, the powers that be at Wellesley seem to want to re-corset the women who had been the backbone of the World War II workforce just a few years earlier. A passionate educator, Katherine takes on the establishment and in doing so, deeply affects her students who in turn lead her to alter the course of her life forever.

Release Date: December 19th, 2003 (wide)

Release Date Note: (7/31/02) The original release date was July 25th, 2003, but Revolution has bumped it up two weeks to July 11th, 2003. (9/20/02) Sony has bumped this back to sometime in the fall of 2003, presumably to help increase its chances at Oscars, awards, etc. (10/5/02) Sony has decided to aim for the big pre-Thanksgiving release date of November 21st. (3/20/03) Sony must be getting great test screening buzz and indications that this film has a very good chance at being "Oscar Bait", because they've bumped it back another month to December 19th, where it will open against Garfield and come two days after The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Title Note: (10/8/03) According to the MPAA, at one point, this film was also known as 'As Per Gloria.'

MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for sexual content and thematic issues)

Distributor: Columbia Pictures (Sony)

Production Company: Revolution Studios (Radio, America's Sweethearts), Shoelace Productions (Stepmom; Roberts' company)

Cast: Julia Roberts (Katherine Watson), Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles (Joan Brandwyn), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Gilselle Levy), Ginnifer Goodwin (Constance Baker), Topher Grace (Tommy Donegal), Marcia Gay Harden (Nancy Abbey), John Slattery (Paul Moore), Juliet Stevenson (Amanda Armstrong), Dominic West (Bill Dunbar), Laura Allen (Susan Delacorte), Tori Amos (The Wedding Singer), Paul Vincent Black (Joseph O'Neill), Jordan Bridges (Spencer Jones), James Callahan (John Brandwyn), Donna Mitchell (Mrs. Warren), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Charlie Stewart), Terence Rigby (Dr. Edward Staunton), Taylor Roberts (Louise), John M. Scurti (Stan Sher), Marian Seldes (President Jocelyn Carr)

Cast Notes: (10/25/01) This is the second of three films that Roberts is signed to do for Revolution Studios, after America's Sweethearts.

Director: Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, Pushing Tin, An Awfully Big Adventure, Enchanted April)

Screenwriter: Mark Rosenthal and Lawrence Konner (writing team of Mercury Rising, Mighty Joe Young, The Jewel of the Nile, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, For Love or Money; cowriters of The Prisoner and Planet of the Apes)

Premise: Compared to Dead Poets Society, this is the story of a free-spirited Berkeley graduate (Roberts) in 1953 who takes a position as a teacher at the women's college, Wellesley. At first impressed by what great students she has, the teacher finds herself frustrated that for the most part, the aspirations that life has taught them to strive for are mostly to land a great husband, and not pursue the sort of occupations she knows they're capable of. (Harden plays a fellow teacher and friend; West plays Roberts' romantic interest; Grace plays Stiles' boyfriend; Stevenson plays Roberts' housemate).

Filming: (10/25/01) Production is scheduled to start in early 2002 in an "unspecified East Coast city" (source: Variety, 10/23/01). Wellesley College is located 12 miles north of Boston, MA. One has to wonder if the possible reticence about filming there (if there is any) may be because of the recent safety concerns some have expressed about Boston's Logan Airport, which was where both airliners that crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11th, originated (specifically, I'm talking about possible safety concerns for Ms. Roberts). Officially, Logan assures that all necessary security measures are in place. Please be clear that this is all just me hypothesizing... the choice of filming location may have nothing to do with safety at all... just guessing. Just as likely, it could be that the producers are working to secure permission to film at Wellesley, but the deal's not done yet, hence they're not announcing where it is yet. (11/22/01) Production is now scheduled to start in late 2002 or early 2003. (6/27/02) Filming is now scheduled to start on September 30th, 2002, probably in and around Boston, MA. (9/26/02) The start of production has been pushed back a bit to November, 2002. (11/26/02) Filming indeed started earlier this month, with one of the locations being Tarrytown, NY. (1/31/03) Filming wrapped up earlier this month.

Greg's Preview Thoughts:
Sort: By Most Recent | Chronologically

7/19/02 - With the news from Michael Fleming of "Variety" that Julia Stiles has signed on, and Kirsten Dunst is in talks, this project has gone from what I was expecting to see as an ensemble piece with lots of young not-quite-famous-yet actresses, to one where the supporting cast has star power in their own right, which separates it, say, from comparisons to Dead Poets Society (with girls). Is the rest of the cast going to be as luminous? (and let me note... I don't think it has to be; the question is just rhetorical).

6/27/02 - As this project, which has always sounded to me like "Dead Poets Society, but at a women's college", gears up for production in the fall, the casting notices are being sent out on the East Coast. This process is something that FilmJerk.com seems to be fairly well connected to, as they regularly supply the Internet with detailed character lists, and they've done it again with this Julia Roberts project.
