SOLID WOOD

Solid wood flooring is still considered to be the best. Made from hardwood, such as oak or maple, or softwood, such as pine, most floors come in either 2 1/4- or 1 1/2-inch wide strips. (Pieces wider than 3 inches are called planks.) Each strip is milled with tongue-and-groove joints. The interlocking joint creates a single strong sheet, which adds rigidity to the floor.

• Sanding and finishing can cost as much as flooring material.

FLOOR PREPARATION

The best subfloor is 3/4-inch plywood or 1 x 6 boards. Install a layer of rosin paper or 15-pound roofing felt over the subfloor to prevent squeaks. Run the strips at a right angle to the joists for a suffer installation.

HOW TO INSTALL

Rent a mallet-driven nailer that drives special 2-inch nails through the flooring tongue and simultaneously drives the strip tight against the previous piece. To finish, rent a floor sander to flatten the joints and smooth the floor. Take care not to gouge the floor. Use a buffer to finish smoothing the floor. Carefully vacuum up any dust, apply stain, and then spread on at least three coats of finish. Sand lightly between each coat.
