PARQUET

Parquet is an eye-catching alternative to strip flooring. There are many intricate patterns you can use to turn your floor into a dazzling wood mosaic, although most homeowners choose the economical finger-block style. Typically, the parquet you'll find is about 5/16-inch thick, prefinished, and milled with tongues and grooves.

Floor Preparation

To lay a top-notch parquet floor, provide a rock-solid subfloor by nailing a layer of 1/2-inch plywood over the existing subfloor. Stagger the joints so they don't match up with those of the plywood below. You can glue parquet to a dry concrete floor that is above ground level.

How To Install

To lay a parquet floor, snap a pair of perpendicular chalklines to divide the room into four parts. Working out from the center, spread the adhesive and lay the tiles. To press the parquet into the glue, cover a section with a 2 x 2-foot piece of 3/4-inch plywood and tap the plywood with a hammer.
