| INSTALLING A FLOATING WOOD LAMINATE FLOORTo prepare a concrete floor, vacuum it thoroughly and make sure it's level. Then cover it with 6-mil polyethylene sheets, overlapping the seams by 8 inches and sealing them with duct tape. The sheets should run at least 3 inches up the walls. The sheets of foam underlayment, which are laid over the poly, should not be overlapped or run up the walls. Keep the cartons of flooring closed until you are ready to use them; they have a low moisture content and leaving them open could make the planks swell. Begin laying the flooring in a corner, placing the grooved sides against 1/2-inch plywood spacers. Apply a bead of the adhesive recommended by the manufacturer along the sides and at the ends of each plank. Wipe away excess glue immediately with a damp cloth. Drive the planks together by gently tapping on a piece of scrap flooring fitted over the tongue of the plank; never strike the tongue directly. Use a jigsaw to cut the planks around outside corners or along walls, and be sure you're cutting the correct end. Force the last planks into place along walls with a pry bar or a hammer and a "tugger." Make a tugger by screwing a block and a metal plate to a 2x4. If you use a pry bar, be careful not to damage walls. When you lay the planks, try to scatter those with unusual grain or color patterns so they're not all together. Stagger the joints where the wood meets end-to-end. If you lay a plank and then notice that it is damaged, remove it; once the glue sets, it can be impossible to separate. If your room is not perfectly square, you will have to rip a plank (cut it lengthwise) wider on one end than on the other. g|^ The tongue of transition pieces should lap over the flooring but must not be fastened to the flooring.
