GLUE-DOWN LAMINATE

Laminates feature a prefinished top layer of either a hardwood veneer or plastic. Layers of plywood below stabilize and support the top, making this type of flooring resistant to warps and cracks. Laminate strips are typically 1/2-inch thick, anywhere from 3 to 8 inches wide, and up to 8 feet long. The pieces interlock with tongues and grooves.

Pros & Cons

• Quick and easy installation.
• More stable than solid wood.
• Glues directly to a level subfloor.
• V-grooves between planks collect dirt and are hard to clean.
• Cannot always be refinished.

Floor Preparation

You can glue laminate strips directly to a firm, level 3/4-inch subfloor. If your subfloor has dips and rises, you need to sand down the high spots, lay a new subfloor, or level the dips with a commercial filler.

How To Install

Glue-down laminate floors are installed just like parquet, starting from a straight guideline along the wall. Be sure to use the the mastic and trowel size that is recommended by the manufacturer.
