REPAIRING WALLPAPER

Fixing a Hole

I have discovered a hole in the wallpaper in my hallway. Is there a way to fix this?
Yes, there is a way to cover that hole, but fixing a hole in wallpaper requires a small leftover piece of the same paper. If you didn't save any, you might be able to get some from the dealer, who sold the wallpaper to you originally.

To fix the hole, center the scrap piece over the hole and line up the pattern so it matches the pattern on the wall exactly. Then lightly tape it to the wall with masking tape.

Using a straightedge and utility knife, carefully cut a rectangular area slightly larger than the hole. Press just hard enough to cut through both layers of wallpaper. Remove the patch and the damaged paper behind it. Now you will have a rectangular hole and a patch that fits it exactly. Apply wallpaper paste to the patch and press it in place to transfer the paste to the wall. Remove the patch, and when the paste becomes tacky, put the patch back in place and smooth it with a damp sponge.

Repairing Curling Seams

Some seams in our wallpaper are starting to curl. How can I restick them in place for good?
Loose seams can be reglued with special seam adhesive. Apply the adhesive along the edge of the curled seam, then flatten it with a wallpaper seam roller. Remove any excess adhesive with a damp sponge. If the seams are badly curled, you may need to hold them flat with thumbtacks or easy-release masking tape to give the adhesive time to set.

Cleaning Off Dirt

I'd like to clean my wallpaper, but I'm afraid of ruining it. Can you give me some tips?
Most modern wallcoverings can be washed with mild soap and water. Start at the bottom and work your way up. If you start at the top, dirty water will flow down the wallcovering and leave streaks that are difficult to remove. Never use powdered cleanser. Nonwashable wallcovering can be cleaned with cleaning dough, which works like a big eraser. If you're unsure if your wallcovering is washable, ask the dealer who sold it to you or call the manufacturer.

Deflating Bubbles

How can I get rid of a bubble in my wallpaper?
First use a glue injector to inject wallpaper seam adhesive into the middle of the bubble. Use a seam roller to spread the adhesive toward the edges of the bubble. Then drive excess adhesive back toward the center and out the needle hole. Wipe off the squeezed-out adhesive with a damp sponge, and flatten the needle hole with the roller.
