REMOVING WALLPAPER

Some wallcoverings are tougher to remove than others. If the wall was not properly sized and primed when the wallpaper was hung, it can be nearly impossible to remove without tearing up the wall.

Newer, strippable wallcoverings have a top layer that peels right off. To remove the backing layer that remains, coat it with water from a sponge or sprayer and let it soak in for a few minutes. Then just scrape the backing off the wall. (If your walls are plaster, use a fine mist of hot water.)

Older wallpapers usually come off easily if you perforate them to help the water get to the glue. You can buy a perforating tool for this purpose. Give the water time to work. If the paper is stubborn, try soaking it with a special wallpaper-remover solution.

If you still can't get the paper off without tearing the drywall or crumbling the plaster, leave the paper in place. Seal loose seams with seam sealer, and prime and size before putting up the new paper.

How Is It Done?

1. To see if the paper is strippable, try loosening an upper comer and pulling the surface layer straight down.
2. If the paper adheres tightly, perforate it with a special perforating tool. Or draw a handsaw across the surface.
3. Soak the perforated paper with water or wallpaper-removing solution. Then scrape the paper off with a broad knife.
4. Scrub the walls with an abrasive pad and a cleanser to remove any remaining material.
