Papering over Paneling

Many of the walls in our home are covered with dark wood paneling. Can we wallpaper over it?
Yes. But first fill the joints and grooves in the paneling with joint compound to smooth out the walls. Then apply a lining paper, often called blank stock, to give an even smoother base for the final wallpaper. This job gets tricky, so you might want to hire a professional paper-hanger to ensure top-quality results.

Sizing Walls for Paper

Should I size or prime my walls before I hang wallpaper?

Sizing is a wallpaper undercoat. It acts as a sealer that keeps wallpaper paste from soaking into the drywall or plaster. It makes the walls a little sticky, adding to the holding power of the paste. It also makes it easier to remove the paper later on if you need to strip it off.

If a wall is new and has never beer painted, or if it has a lot of patches, apply a primer before sizing. If the wall is painted and in good condition, you can size it without priming. Roll on a single coat of sizing. Use a brush to get close to moldings and ceilings; these areas need the sizing most because they are where the wallpaper edges will be.

If you are papering over existing wallpaper (which you should do only in special circumstances), roll on two coats of oil-base primer, then a coat of sizing. You usually have to wait overnight for the sizing to dry before hanging the paper. There are n also primersizings available. Ask a knowledgeable salesperson what you need for your project.
