PAPERING A ROOM

Before you start, turn off the power at the main electrical panel to prevent the risk of shock when working around wall switches and outlets. Remove all faceplates.

The techniques are basically the same for non- ( prepasted as for prepasted materials. Begin by marking a plumb line for the edge of the first section t of wallcovering, called a drop. Plan ahead so that all drops extend 4 inches or more past corners. The best ( place to start is along a door or in an inconspicuous r corner, where any pattern mismatch that occurs where t the last drop meets the first won't be noticeable.

Now, thoroughly wet the back of the first drop with 1 lukewarm water until a milky paste forms. Be sure to r wet all edges and ends to avoid peeling later on.

Fold the drop in half, with pasted face to pasted face; then fold it again. When you fold, or "book," the wallcovering as recommended by the manufacturer's instructions, the paste can absorb evenly. When the wallcovering is ready, position the edge along the plumb line, starting at the top. The wallcovering should overlap floor and ceiling moldings at this stage.

Using a smoothing brush, flatten the drop against the wall, working large bubbles out toward the edges. Tiny bubbles will disappear as the wallcovering dries. When you're ready to hang the second drop, make certain the pattern matches. Continue to hang the drops in place, taking care not to stretch them.

When the adhesive is tacky, about 30 minutes after hanging the wallcovering, give the seams a single light rolling with a seam roller. Then wipe the seams clean. Trim the excess wallcovering from the top and bottom by pressing a broad knife firmly against the molding, then cutting with a sharp razor knife.

How Is It Done?

  1. Mark a plumb line to indicate the edge of the first section
  2. Wet the back of the first drop with lukewarm water
  3. Fold drop in half, pasted face to pasted face;then fold it again
  4. Position the edge of the first drop along the plumb line, starting at the top
  5. Roll seams using light pressure-and only roll them once
  6. Trim excess from the top and bottom with a broad knife and razor knife
