WALLPAPER FINISHING TOUCHES

Covering Outlet Covers

I want professional-looking wallpaper results. How do I cover switch and outlet cover plates?
Anytime you are working around electrical outlets, the first thing you need to do is turn off the electricity at the circuit panel or fuse box. Water, metal tools, and electricity are a dangerous combination.

Remove the covers, wash them in warm soapy water to remove dirt and oils, and scuff them with extra-fine sandpaper. Brush on a coat of wallpaper sizing and let them dry overnight. When they're dry, put them back in place.

Put a large scrap of wallpaper over the switch plate (or outlet cover) and position it to match the pattern of the surrounding wall. Remove the scrap and trim it so that it's approximately 1 inch larger than the plate on each side.

Wet the paper, let it set, then place the piece over the plate on the wall, taking care to match the pattern exactly along the edges. Hold the paper in that position and carefully remove the cover, with the paper, from the wall.

Clip the corners of the paper at a 45° angle; then crease and fold the edges over the back of the plate. Secure the edges flat with a thin bead of seam sealer. Make the cutouts for the switch or outlet after the wall-paper has dried. Working from the front, use the openings in the plate to guide your knife. Now reinstall your wallpapered plates and covers.

Hanging Around Windows

I'm ready to wallpaper my living room, which has four windows. How do I paper around them?
To paper around a window, drape the wallcovering so that it overlaps the window frame by 5 or 6 inches; take care not to crease it. Make diagonal cuts from the outside corner of the window moldings to the edge of the wallcovering. Now trim the excess wallcovering by carefully pressing it against the molding and trimming it off with your razor knife. Cutting around odd profiles will require many small cuts.

Making Straight Cuts

What is the best method for achieving straight edges when trimming wallcovering?
To make crisp, straight cuts when trimming wallcovering, you need to start with crisp, straight surfaces to cut against. Remove any paint blobs along door and window moldings and any caulk along baseboards beforehand. Use a scraper or sand-paper to even out rough areas along woodwork. If your ceiling is spray textured, use a broad knife turned at an angle to scrape and remove a 1/8-inch line of ceiling spray texture where the ceiling meets the wall.

Trim your paper with a razor knife that holds small snap-off blades. Use a 5- or 6-inch broad knife to keep the wallcovering from lifting and tearing, and to provide a straight guide to cut along. (Slightly round the corners of the broad knife with sandpaper or a file, so they don't dig into and tear the wallpaper.)

For best results, cut along the length of the broad knife; then, with-out moving the razor blade, leapfrog the broad knife ahead and continue your cut. Don't press so hard that you cut through the underlying drywall tape. Change your razor blade often for sharp, precise cuts.

Pattern Matching on a Wide Window

I have wide windows in the living room. How can I make sure my wallpaper patterns and seams line up by the time I reach the far side of the window?
The wider the window, the more difficult this can be. The trick is to lightly position the last two or three pieces so you can make adjustments on them while lining up the patterns and widths.

After hanging the piece at one side, install the pieces above the window, and trim them along the ceiling and window frame. Using an easily recognizable part of the wallpaper design as a starting point, draw a horizontal line under the window with a 4-foot level.

Hang the first bottom piece, lining up the pattern along this horizontal line. Lightly lay the other bottom pieces and the full-length piece along the other side, using the horizontal line as a guide. Adjust the pieces until the patterns match and the seams fit tightly, without gaps or overlap. When the patterns are aligned and the seams are tight, finish smoothing out and trimming the pieces.

Make sure you book the individual pieces for equal amounts of time so they will expand to equal widths.

Hanging a Corner

What is the best way to hang wallpaper around the inside corner of a wall?
To hang a corner, measure from the edge of the last full drop to the corner, at the top, middle and bot-tom of the wall. Then cut the paper 1/8 to 1/4 inch wider than the largest measurement. Use a 4-foot level as a guide for your razor knife to cut the booked paper. Install this first piece, wrapping the excess around the inside corner.

Draw a plumb line on the adjacent wall the same distance from the corner as the width of the remaining piece. Install this second piece, matching the pattern in the corner and laying the other edge exactly on the plumb line. Run a small bead of seam adhesive at the corner to secure the overlap if necessary (always do this with solid vinyl wallcoverings).
