VINYL CARE AND REPAIR

Damaged Sheet Flooring

There are a few small cuts and some larger rips in my vinyl flooring. How can I repair them?
For small cuts, apply vinyl floor tile adhesive to the backs of loose edges, then weight the tiles until they're dry.

To repair rips, burns, and cuts, a transplant is the solution.

Remove the damaged section of flooring by cutting along the pattern with a sharp utility knife. Pry up the damaged piece with a putty knife, using a hair dryer to soften the old adhesive if you need to.
Use the damaged piece as a tem-plate to cut a replacement patch from a matching remnant you have packed away.

If you don't have a spare, steal one off the floor from inside a closet or from under the refrigerator. Tape the template in place and use a framing square and knife to follow the edges to create your patch. Remove the patch as described above; then glue the damaged one back in its place.

Scrape the old adhesive from the underlayment and test-fit the patch. Apply the floor tile adhesive, wait the recommended time, then position and press the patch in place with a rolling pin. Clean up excess adhesive with a rag, water, and detergent. Weight down the patch for 24 hours while the adhesive dries.

Replacing a Vinyl Tile

What's the best way to replace a damaged vinyl tile?
Loosen the tile and the adhesive by heating it with a hair dryer. To avoid damaging surrounding tiles, chip away and pry in the middle of the damaged tile, then work toward the edges. Remove old adhesive with a paint scraper. Trim the new tile as necessary with a sharp utility knife guided by a straightedge. Spread the adhesive and set the tile in place.

*Set the new tile, then leave weights in place for 24 hr. while the adhesive dries.

Removing Old Tiles

I'm having a tough time removing vinyl tiles from my basement floor. Is there an easy way to get rid of them that I don't know about?
Go to the nearest rental center that caters to contractors and rent a tile stripper. It works like a giant electric chisel to dig tiles out. Using this little powerhouse, you can finish the job in a matter of hours. In really stubborn areas, lift the back wheels off the floor so the machine's entire weight bears down on the blade.

*A tile stripper's 75-lb. weight applies pressure to a sharp blade to strip tile.

Moisture on Vinyl Flooring

When it rains, the sheet vinyl floor on our slab porch turns white from condensation. We want to put down new vinyl but need to solve the moisture problem first.
It sounds as though your problem comes more from surface water than from condensation. If rain is getting on the floor, the vinyl can blush, or turn white, returning to its normal color only after an extended drying period. If you want a vinyl floor, find a way to prevent water from coming in through the windows. Then seal the concrete with a masonry sealant before putting down new vinyl.

Yellowing No-Wax Vinyl

I installed no-wax vinyl flooring in my kitchen. Within a year, yellow splotches appeared all over it. What is this and bow do I to correct it? Unfortunately, these yellow splotches won't come out—you have to replace the floor. Either you have too much moisture in the subfloor below the vinyl or the wrong adhesive was used. Remove the yellowing vinyl and test the floor for moisture.

Replace the flooring with one that the manufacturer specifically states can withstand the moisture, or staple down 4-mil polyethylene sheeting covered with 1/4-inch plywood under-layment before installing new vinyl. When applying the vinyl, be sure to use an adhesive recommended by the flooring manufacturer.

Asbestos and Old Flooring

Linoleum rarely contains asbestos. However, asbestos could be in the backing and adhesive that is left once you pull up the flooring.

• Before you begin the project, pull up a small sample of the flooring, backing, and adhesive and bring it to your local health department for testing. They may charge you a nominal fee. If asbestos is found, you should leave the old flooring in place. When the old flooring is intact, the asbestos is safely contained. Removal would make the asbestos airborne and cause a health hazard.

• Put plywood underlayment down over the old flooring and then install the new flooring. It will add about 1/2 to 3/4 inch of height to your floor.
