No-Show Vinyl Seams

How can I make the seams invisible when I install sheet vinyl flooring in my kitchen?
Most flooring comes in 12-foot widths, so you may get by without seams. If you're not that lucky, lay out the flooring so the seams will fall in low-traffic areas. Guide your seam cuts by laying a straightedge along a repeating pattern in the floor-ing. Many vinyl floors, for example, have a grid pattern imitating ceramic tile with grout lines; cut your seam down the center of one of these fake grout lines.

Using the straightedge, cut one sheet of flooring along the fake grout line; then do the same with the other sheet. Lay the two edges together and check the fit. Spread adhesive under the seam and run the roller over it. Use masking tape to hold the seam together. Once the glue has set, the seam can then be cleaned with mineral spirits and sealed with seam sealer.

*Cut one sheet of flooring along the center of a grout line using a straightedge. Then do the same to the other sheet.

*Lay the two edges together and check the fit. Spread adhesive under the seam and run the roller over it.

Choosing Sheet Vinyl

What should I know about shet vinyl flooring before I buy it?
The cost and quality of sheet vinyl flooring vary widely, so buy the highest quality you can afford. Use the underlayment and adhesive recommended by the manufacturer or you may void the warranty.

Do-it-yourselfers should stick to "rotogravure" vinyl. Designed with the pattern printed on the surface, rotovinyl is available in 6- to 15-foot widths, which minimizes the number of seams required. Inlaid vinyl sheet flooring should be installed by a professional.

Rotovinyl comes with either felt or flexible backing. Flexible costs more but is easier to install. Most felt-backed floors are glued down all over. Flexible-backed vinyl is glued or stapled around the edges and at seams only. Home centers sell helpful installation kits.

If you hire someone to lay the flooring, you can still save money by installing the underlayment yourself.

Good Base for Sheet Vinyl

I want to put in new sheet vinyl flooring. Can I fust nail underlayment over the old vinyl that's there?
Vinyl can go over any clean, flat sound base. To lay a new floor over old vinyl, remove all baseboards and undercut the door casings, cut out any loose or curling edges of old vinyl flooring with a utility knife, and fill any holes with floor patch. To get a perfectly smooth surface, you may have to sand the floor patch after it dries. Then sweep and vacuum.
If the floor is damaged or uneven, install an underlayment of 1/4-inch lauan plywood. Use 7/8-inch chisel-point staples and stagger the seams so that four corners never meet in one place. Flatten any protruding staples with a hammer. Fill underlayment seams with floor patch.

*Use a trowel or broad putty knife to fill any area you've cut out and other holes and depressions with floor patch.

*Staple 1/4-in. underpayment in a 4-in. square pattern and every 2 in. around the edges.
