INSTALLING VINYL FLOORING

Laying out sheet vinyl flooring isn't difficult. If you have some experience with tools, you can probably do a first-rate job in one weekend. But you have to be as careful as a surgeon: one false move can leave a permanent scar on your floor.

Most felt-backed floors, such as the one we show here, must be glued down all over. Flexible-backed vinyl should be glued around the edges and at seams only. Different brands—and even different designs—can require different adhesives. Small mistakes can lead to big headaches, so always follow the manufacturer's instructions, right down to the size of the notches in the trowel you use to spread the adhesive.

If the room has a complex shape or if your cutting skills are shaky, make a full-size paper template of your floor and use the template to cut the flooring to fit before you install it. Otherwise, the professional techniques of cutting in place, shown here, are usually faster.

How Is It Done?

  1. Lay the flooring along cabinets or along a wall; then unroll and position it. Use duct tape to keep corners from tearing.
  2. Press the knuckle of your pointing finger into the inside comers and mark the point of the corner with your thumb.
  3. Pull up the flooring, draw a "horseshoe" on the comer, and cut it out with a utility knife.
  4. Push the vinyl against the wall with your straightedge, and trim off the excess. Change blades often.
  5. Roll back the sheet of vinyl about halfway across the room, vacuum the area free of debris, then spread the adhesive. Roll back the other half and repeat.
  6. Starting in the middle, roll outward in an overlapping pattern. Use a hand roller wherever the floor roller won't fit.
