TYPES OF TRIM

Beautiful woodwork is one factor that distinguishes many older homes from modern houses. The rich detail gives these homes a certain character and structure. Besides adding decoration, wood trim also hides gaps and protects walls. Not surprisingly, these traditional treatments are reappearing in many new homes.

Casing

Casing is the trim that wraps around doors and windows. Older homes have substantial-looking moldings that range from simple to ornate. Traditional casings often include rosettes, or corner pieces, and plinths, thicker pieces at the base that the baseboard and casing butt into. Modern casing is simpler and narrower.

Chair Rail

Today, chair rail is often all that remains of old-style wainscoting, wood paneling that protected the lower part of a wall. Used alone, chair rail visually divides the wall to accent wallpaper or different wall color schemes. The height is often adjusted in dining rooms to protect the wall from chair backs. Chair rail in other rooms is often set at whatever height looks best.

Crown Molding

The ornamental treatment is used to "top off" a room and to ease the transition between the wall and the ceiling. Crown molding is available in different profiles, such as ogee and cove. Cornice moldings are similar to crown moldings but are more elaborate. They are typically made up of several pieces and are reserved for use in high-style rooms.

Baseboard

Once called "mop board" because it protected the walls from wet mops, baseboard defines the transition between the floor and the wall. The quarter round is used instead of scribing to hide minor gaps. Because the shorter baseboards can be hidden by thick carpeting, many carpenters install them as much as 3/4 inch off the floor.
