REPAIRING PLASTER

Plaster-to-Drywall Joints

How can I make a joint between plaster and drywall unnoticeable?
Make sure that the plaster is solid, with no major irregularities. Then carefully cut it back to the center of a stud. Bevel the edge slightly for 2 inches to allow for tape and compound. Next attach the drywall. (Most plaster walls are -3/8-inch thick, but you may have to shim the drywall to make it even with plaster.) Finish the joint with tape and joint compound as you would drywall. First dampen the plaster edge with a spray bottle so that it won't draw moisture from the compound too quickly. For best results, skim-coat the whole wall

Fixing Plaster around Trim

Our house needs new trim, but the plaster under the old trim is falling off. Can it be repaired?
Removing old trim and loose plaster can get messy, but if you score the wall with a utility knife, the plaster will tend to break along the scored lines. Remove the trim and the plaster, then build up the area with a setting-type compound. Apply the com-pound with a trowel to about 1/8-inch below the finished surface. Finish with several thin coats of lightweight joint compound. Prime and paint the wall before installing the trim.

To repair a large section of plaster, use a drywall patch.

Plaster Won't Hold Screws

The screws on my heat registers have broken the plaster and lath. Now there's nothing to anchor the screws to. What can I do?
Replace the broken plaster with a piece of plywood. To do this, chip out a 3-inch-wide strip of plaster going to the nearest stud. Make sure the area is rectangular. Cut a piece of plywood (3/8- inch is usually the best thickness) to fit, and attach it to the stud with drywall screws. Apply joint compound and paper tape on top of the plywood patch, and smooth it to match your wall.

Flaky Basement Walls

A blistered, chalky residue has worked through our painted basement walls. We want to paint the walls and finish the basement. What should we do?
The blistered residue you describe is common on basement walls. Moisture from outside works its way through the foundation into the plaster and forms a chalky residue called efflorescence.

Before you do any more work in your basement, look for any mis-directed rainwater from downspouts or an inadequate slope in the ground next to the house that may cause water to run toward the basement.

The best solution for a crumbling basement wall is to seal the founda-tion, then build a separate interior wall and cover it with drywall. First clear away any loose plaster and efflorescence with a wire brush and coat the wall with a sealer. When this is dry, build a stud wall with a treated wood bottom plate. Install fiber-glass batts or rigid panel insulation between the studs. Staple a plastic vapor retarder over the frame before hanging the drywall.
