PAINTING MASONRY

Painting Ceramic Tile

The ceramic tile in my bathroom is in good condition, but the color is very outdated. Can I paint it?
Many people are surprised to learn that you can paint ceramic tile. First clean off any mildew or soap residue; then prime the tile with a primer-sealer specially formulated to adhere to ceramic and other hard-to-stick-to surfaces. Some formulas can bond without any additional sanding, etching, or deglossing. A primer-sealer provides an anchor for the top coat to grip. For best results, the top coat should be a high-gloss alkyd—latex paint won't stick to ceramic tile.

Painting a Basement Floor

My basement floor is covered with a glossy oil-base enamel. I want to repaint it, but nothing will stick to it. What can I do?
Oil-base enamels are glossy, which causes an adhesion problem. Try roughening the surface with 80-grit sandpaper on a universal sanding pole (a pivot-headed pole normally used for sanding drywall).

Another solution is to use a water-soluble nonflammable paint stripper on the floor. But make sure that there is good ventilation if you use this method. Avoid flammable stripping compounds because they might be ignited by a pilot light. The stripper should etch the paint enough to let the new paint bond to the old surface.

STAINING CONCRETE

One way to get a good-looking concrete floor is to stain it. First, clean the floor with trisodium phosphate or a similar cleanser. Next etch the floor with muriatic or phosphoric acid so that it will accept stain. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and full-wrap goggles when working with acid. Always add acid to water, not water to acid.

If you need more than 1 gallon of stain, mix it all in one large container for uniform color. Apply it with a 1/4- to 1/2-inch-nap roller. Use a synthetic brush to cut in along walls. Don't thin stain with water or apply it when it's above 90° or below 50° F. Wait 24 hours to see if you need a second coat. When staining outdoors, make sure it's not going to rain for a couple of days.

How Is It Done?

  1. Wash the floor with trisodium phosphate. Then wet it with a hose. Sprinkle on muriatic acid; scrub it in with a stiff-bristle floor brush for a minute or so.
  2. Let the acid foam and etch the surface for 20 mm. Then tuple-rinse it with a hose. If an area didn't foam, clean it well with degreaser and etch it again.
  3. After the floor dries thoroughly, roll on stain in 3 x 3-ft. sections with a short-nap roller. Wait 24 hr. before using the surface, 72 hr. before driving on it.
