PAINT REMOVER

CHOOSING A CHEMICAL PAINT REMOVER

There are four basic types of chemical paint removers. Choose one according to how fast you want to work, how comfortable you are using hazardous chemicals, and the amount of paint you have to strip.

FAST-ACTING STRIPPERS: containing toxic methylene chloride are effective on most coatings and are popular among professionals. Wear an organic vapor respirator when you use them and ventilate the area well.

WATER-BASE STRIPPERS: take up to 24 hours to work. They're a little safer than fast-acting strippers, but their long-term health effects are still being tested. Many irritate the skin, and some require respirators.

CAUSTIC STRIPPERS: are also slower-acting but use high alkalinity to remove paint. They don't generally release harmful fumes, but they'll irritate and burn your skin if not immediately washed off. Caustic strippers remove thick layers of paint but require a neutralizer (vinegar rinse) before refinishing. Don't use a caustic stripper on veneered surfaces or hardwoods.

STRONG SOLVENTS: such as acetone, toluene, and methanol remove thin layers of paint but evaporate quickly and can leave a sticky mess behind. They are commonly sold as refinishers for varnished wood, to partially remove and clean the finish. Safe use requires good ventilation and a respirator.

Removing Paint from Tile

My ceramic bathroom tiles are painted. How can I remove the paint without damaging the tile?
The approach that is least likely to damage the tile is to carefully scrape the paint off with a razor scraping tool. If there is more tile than you want to scrape, try using a water-base paint stripper (not methylene chloride-base), but do a test in an inconspicuous corner first.

Be aware that the tile underneath may not be in great shape: perhaps that`s why it was painted in the first place. If the tile was sanded or etched before the paint was applied, the damage is irreparable.

Even if the tiles look good, you will still need to scrape out and replace the old grout. Considering the time and expense involved in this procedure, it may actually be more practical to remove the old tile and replace it with vrand-new tile.

Getting Paint Out of Nooks and Crannies

How can I remove the paint out of all the crevices and corners?
Most strippers won't lift all the paint with just one application. Deeper buildups in corners and edges almost always require a second coat of stripper. Tools that can help include brushes, cotton swabs, dental picks, and old screwdrivers. Use steel wool only with solvent-base strippers; water-base strippers cause the steel wool to rust.
