PAINT CLEANUP

Cleaning Brushes

I forgot to clean my brushes after varnishing and painting. Now they're as hard as rocks. Is there a way to salvage them?
You're not the first person, and definitely not the last, to make that mistake. Fortunately, you can buy a powdered solvent at your local hardware store that will break down the hardened paint and varnish and soften the bristles overnight.

Read the instructions carefully, because some solvents are not recommended for natural-bristle brushes and won't remove hardened polyurethane or vinyl.

After soaking the bristles in the solvent, put on rubber gloves and brush out the old residue with a stiff, nylon scrub brush. Then rinse the bristles in warm, soapy water. To store the brush, wrap it in its original sleeve or in a piece of brown kraft paper to shape it until it's dry.

Disposing of Toxic Rags

How do you safely dispose of rags soaked in combustible liquids?
Rags soaked in linseed oil or solvents—such as mineral spirits or denatured alcohol—should be spread out flat to dry or hung on a clothesline in a well-ventilated area away from children, pets, and flames. Once they've dried, you can throw them out with your other garbage.

Dispose of rags soaked with paint remover the same way, as long as the paint stripped was not lead-base. If it was, call your local health department for instructions on how to safely dispose of them.

Cleaning Rollers

Is it worth the effort to clean and save paint rollers? Or should I just buy cheap disposable ones?
Cheap rollers don't perform as well as more expensive ones. You'll be better off buying good rollers and cleaning them. To clean a roller of latex paint, scrape off the excess. Dunk the roller in warm water and work the nap along the entire roller with your hand. Spin it into an empty bucket, rinse in clean warm water, then spin again. You can buy an inexpensive spinning device at many paint stores. Loosely wrap the roller in plastic wrap and stand it on end.

SAFETY CHECK

Discarding Leftover Paint

Here are some ways to safely dispose of leftover paint:

  • If the paint is latex, remove the lid and let the paint dry out. Be sure you do this in an area away from children and animals. Once the paint's completely dry, your garbage collector should be willing to take it. Leave the lid off so the collector knows the paint is dry.
  • If the paint is oil-base, it is flammable and considered a hazardous waste, and must be disposed of accordingly. Many communities have designated hazardous waste collection sites and days. If yours does not, contact your local environmental control agency for advice. Never pour oil-base paints down the drain or onto the ground.
  • Paint thinners, turpentine, mineral spirits, and other solvents used with paints should be disposed of in the same manner as oil-base paints.
