TAPING DRYWALL

Here's Why You Use Tape

The joints in my drywall have cracked because I didn't use tape with the drywall compound. How can I repair them?
Unfortunately, you'll need to redo all the joints. The paper tape not only hides the joints, it adds rein-forcement and prevents them from cracking as the house settles.

To fix a joint, first apply a 1/16-inch layer of joint compound to the joint with a 6-inch joint knife. Lay the paper tape on the bed of compound and cover it with a thin layer of compound. When this coat is dry, apply the second coat with a 12-inch joint knife. When the second coat is dry, apply a very thin third coat. Once the third coat has dried, sand it lightly to eliminate edges and lumps. Remember to wear a dust mask and safety goggles when sanding.

Hiding Butt Joints

I can't get flat drywall seams when I tape butt joints. How do the pros get them?
They don't. Fact is, untapered edges at the ends of drywall sheets protrude above the wall surface and are more noticeable than the joints between the tapered ends. Professional hangers try to avoid butt joints altogether by installing longer sheets that reach from corner to corner.

For situations where a butt joint is unavoidable, you'll need to build up a tiny bulge at the seam and feather it out in both directions. Keep each coat smooth and thin by running one end of a trowel or a 12-inch joint knife on the tape and the other end on the drywall. Expect to apply three or four coats of compound. Once it's dry, sand the compound lightly, concentrating on the edges where it blends into the paper.

Taping Uneven Joints

How can I finish a drywall joint when one panel sticks out 1/4 inch more than the other?
You might be able to avoid this if you hang your drywall horizontally rather than vertically, but here's how to fix the problem. You need to build up the low side of the joint with compound. A setting compounc can fill your deep recess without cracking. To hide the joint, smooth the compound over a wide area— at least 10 inches. Setting compound is tough to sand; be sure to feather it out with a trowel before it dries.

To check your progress, lay a straightedge against the joint. Continue building up the low side until there's no visible gap underneath your level. Once you've built up the low side, finish the joint with tape and regular compound.

Caps at Electrical Boxes

How do I fix the gaps in drywall around electrical outlets?
Treat all gaps greater than 3/8-inch as you would any other drywall joint: apply paper tape and three layers of joint compound. A Turn off power to an electrical box at the main service panel before working around it.

Taping Inside Corners

I've gotten the hang of taping outside corners, but I can't get clean-looking inside corners. What am I doing wrong?
Inside corners are no more difficult to finish than nontapered joints. To tape an inside corner, start by applying a 1/16-inch layer of compound to both sides of the corner with a 6-inch joint knife. Next, crease the paper tape in the center, press it into the comer, and embed it in the com-pound. To finish the joint, consider investing in a corner trowel so that you can finish both sides at once. You can use a regular 6-inch knife as shown below, as long as you finish one side at a time. Otherwise your knife will dent the soft compound on one side while you smooth the other.
