INSTALLING DRYWALL

Nails vs. Screws

When I see pros hanging drywall, they use screws. I've always used nails. Which is better?
Either type of fastener will do the job, but thanks to electric screw guns and cordless drills, most pros prefer screws over nails. Unlike the nails, electric drivers quickly drive screws to the correct depth, automatically, without ever damaging the drywall. Screws have greater holding power and can be spaced 8 inches apart along the edges of a panel and 12 inches apart inside the panels (nails need to be spaced every 7 inches). Screws are also easier to remove. Whether you use screws or nails, proper fastening technique is critical for a good job. Sink the fastener head just far enough below the drywall surface so that you can hide it with joint compound. Be careful not to drive the fastener so deep that it breaks through the facing paper or crushes the gypsum core. Use 1 3/8-inch nails and 1 5/8-inch screws for both 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch drywall.

Silent Helper

Is there some easy way to prop up drywall while I'm attaching it to the ceiling?
To hold up ceiling panels, you can make a simple support called a dead-man or T-brace. It's easy to make with a couple of 2x4's. Just measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling joists, and cut a 2x4 so that it's 1 1/2-inches shorter than that length. Then cut another 3-foot length of 2x4 and nail it flat on the end of the first one. Wedge the deadman under the panel to hold up the drywall.

Drywall Meets Brick

I'm installing a low divider wall that abuts a brick wall. How do I finish the edge where the drywall meets the brick?
Your best bet is to install a metal channel called a J-bead along the drywall edge that butts against the brick. The drywall edge fits into the J-bead, creating a crisp line, and the bead's raised edge makes it easy to apply joint compound. Protect the brick with masking tape and paper; joint compound and paint are difficult to remove from masonry.

BUYING DRYWALL

Drywall comes in thicknesses ranging from 1/4-inch to 5/8-inch; but 1/2- inch is the most common. A standard sheet measures 4x8 feet. Longer sheets—typically 12 feet—reduce the number of seams to tape but are more difficult to maneuver and lift. Fire-resistant drywall is required by code in fire-prone areas, and moisture-resistant drywall, sometimes called greenboard, is needed in high-moisture areas.

To estimate the number of sheets of drywall you'll need for a wall, multiply the wall's width by its height, add 15 percent for waste, then divide by 32 (or 48 for a 12-foot sheet).

COMMON SIZES USE
1/4 in., 3/8 in. For covering existing walls (1/4 in.) and ceilings (3/8 in.); flexes for curved walls. Often a special order.
1/2 in. Most common choice for residential walls and ceilings.
1/2 in. fire-resistant For garages and other fire-prone areas
1/2 in. moisture-resistant For semi-damp areas, especially under tiles. (Use resistant cement backer board around tubs and showers)
5/8 in. regular or fire-resistant Gives added durability, sound-deadening, and fire fire-resistant protection. Significantly heavier.
