CUTTING A DRYWALL SHEET

CUTTING A DRYWALL SHEET

Few rooms are perfect multiples of 8, 10, or 12 feet, which means that you'll have to cut drywall panels to fit. For a clean look, butt together the factory edges and orient your cuts to inside or outside corners. Don't worry if your cuts aren't perfect; gaps up to 3/8-inch wide can be filled with joint compound.

  1. Measure the desired length on the face of the panel. Mark the dimensions near the top and bottom edges.
  2. Use a chalk line to mark the cut. Hook the line at the bottom, hold it taut against the top, then snap the line.
  3. Score the front paper with a utility knife. To deepen the cut, take two or more passes with the knife.
  4. Snap the panel from the back; then slice through the back paper. Smooth the cut edge with a rasp, if necessary.

Rust-Stained Corners

Rust stains have appeared on some of the outside corners of our drywall. What's causing this problem and how can we correct it?
The stains are most likely caused by corrosion of the metal corner bead, which has led to a brown rust stain bleeding through the surface paint. Moisture condenses on the corner bead because the metal is cooler than the rest of the wall. The moisture combines with the alkaline drywall mud to eat away at the cor-ner bead. Most likely, your walls had been painted with a latex primer and overcoat. Since rust is water soluble, it has bled through to the surface.

One way to control the problem is to provide better ventilation at the source of the high humidity. Use a kitchen vent fan when cooking, especially when boiling water. When showering, use the bath vent fan or open the window.

Before applying another latex topcoat, you'll need to seal the stain. Look for an oil-base or shellac-base primer/sealer/stain killer. These sealers are great for sealing not only water soluble stains, but for sealing knots on wood before painting.

Covering a Curved Wall

I'd like to build a curved wall. How do I get a sheet of drywall to bend around the framing?
It depends on how tight the curve's radius is. Half-inch drywall is only flexible enough to bend around a radius of 10 feet or more. If the radius is 4 1/2 to 10 feet, use two layers of 1/4-inch drywall. For a tighter curve, you can dampen both sides of the panels to increase flexibility.

To hang the drywall, fasten the board to the first stud. Have a helper bend the panel around the curve as you drive fasteners into each stud.

If you're using two layers of '/i-inch drywall, completely fasten the first layer and then apply a layer of con-struction adhesive. Put the second panel on top and screw it only along its edges. Using adhesive reduces the number of screws and all you'll have to tape and finish is the edges.

Fitting Drywall around Doors and Windows

It takes forever to measure and cut drywall around windows and doors. Is there a better way?
The fastest and most accurate way to hang drywall around interior doors and other openings is by not using a tape measure at all. Professional hangers panel the entire wall and then cut out any openings. Use a drywall saw to make the cut, and smooth any rough edges with a rasp. Don't worry about wasting material; you can often use the cutouts for the closets. Fewer seams will speed up finishing. Eliminating joints at the corners of doors and windows also lessens the potential for cracks.

Avoiding Pipes and Wires

Considering the hundreds of screws that I'll use to hang my drywall, how can I avoid skewering a pipe or wire?
Poking through plumbing or electrical lines is not only annoying but also potentially dangerous. The best way to prevent this from happening is to flag the locations of pipes and wires by marking them on the floor before you start. Protect wires within 1 1/4-inch of the stud face and pipes within 1 1/2-inch with steel plates.

Corners Not Square

I'm having trouble fitting drywall into corners where the walls are not plumb. Is there an easy way to do this?
Before fitting the last panel of drywall into a corner, make sure the edge of the next-to-last panel is plumb and centered on the stud. Then trim the last panel to fit. Measure the width of the opening at the top and at the bottom. Transfer those dimensions to the drywall, snap a chalk line, and cut the sheet. The piece should fit snugly but not so tightly that you have to force it into place.
