| TILING TOOLS, GROUT, ADHESIVES There are two types of tile adhesive. Latex cement-mortar is mortar mixed with a latex additive for greater strength and flexibility. Also known as thinset, it's the best general-purpose adhesive: waterproof, gap- filling, strong under heavy traffic, and low in odor. Organic mastic is the other type of adhesive, often used for setting wall tile. It is pre-mixed and is relatively easy to use. However, it is not waterproof, and it isn't recommended for bathroom floors or shower walls. It has a strong odor, and it should not be used to fill gaps larger than 1/4-inch. Grout comes in a sanded form and an unsanded form. Unsanded grout is good for fine grout lines, but for grout lines wider than 1/8 inch, use sanded grout. Like thinset, grout comes as a powder and is mixed with water or a latex additive. When you've finished grouting, use a penetrating sealer to protect the grout lines from stains and water. Tiling equipment can be rented from a rental outfit or borrowed from the tile shop. The tools you'll need include a notched trowel or two for applying adhesive (ask your tile supplier which one to use with your tile) and a 1/4-inch square-notched trowel if you'll be installing cement board on the floor. You'll also need a float to spread the grout, a round-cornered sponge to wipe off grout, a tile cutter to cut straight lines in tile, and tile nippers break off bits of tile. To cut smooth curves, use a rod saw). These general-purpose tools will come in handy, too: a level, chalk line, framing square, masking tape, buckets, and rags. |
