REGROUTING TILE

Broken or badly worn grout not only looks bad, it can allow moisture to penetrate behind the tile, which can weaken the adhesive or even damage the substrate. Replacing bad grout now will prevent bigger problems later.

Use a grout saw or an old can opener to scrape out the grout between tiles. For big jobs, you may want to use a rotary-type tool with a carbide tip.

Vacuum the dust and debris out of the joints between tiles. Next, use a tile cleaner to wash off any mineral buildup, soap scum, or grout residue.

Mix a batch of new grout to the consistency of toothpaste. Apply the grout with a float, covering about 2 square yards at a time. Allow the grout to set for 30 minutes; then wipe off any excess with a damp sponge. Next, smooth and pack the grout lines with the handle of a toothbrush. Let the grout set overnight; then wipe off any remaining film with a clean dry cloth.

Wait 2 or 3 weeks before sealing the grout with a grout sealer.

How Is It Done?

  1. Hold the tip of the rotary tool against the grout line and pull down.
  2. Sweep a rubber float diagonally across the grout lines to fill the large areas.
  3. Run the end of a toothbrush along the lines to pack the grout.

Replacing a Damaged Tile

What is the best way to replace a damaged tile?
Starting at the grout line, carefully chisel out the damaged tile. Wear goggles and gloves—ceramic tile tends to chip. Scrape off the old adhesive with a cold chisel. Don't use a heat gun or solvent; they will just create a mess. Chip out most of the old grout with a chisel (or use a grout saw) to make room for the new tile.

After removing the old tile and adhesive, apply adhesive to the back of the replacement tile with a notched trowel, then put the tile in place. Make sure the grout lines align with the adjacent tiles. For floor tiles, use thinset mortar (as the adhesive) and sanded grout. For wall tiles, use premixed mastic adhesive and non-sanded grout.

Using a scrap of wood and a hammer, gently tap the new tile flush with the other tiles. If the tile is lower than the surrounding tiles, remove it and apply more adhesive. Clean off any ooze from the grout lines with the tip of a screwdriver. Allow the adhesive to set for 24 hours before applying grout.

If you use nonmatching repair tile, consider replacing a few others to make a decorative pattern.

How Is It Done?

  1. Chip away the damaged tile and old adhesive with a hammer and cold chisel.
  2. Don't skimp on the thinset. Any excess can be cleaned up after leveling the tile.
