REPAIRING AND IMPROVING

Attaching to Concrete

I have a concrete ceiling covered with crumbling plaster. I want to cover it with drywall, but how do I attach it?
The best way to attach drywall to concrete is to first install 1 x 3 furring strips. You want to position the strips so that the sheets of drywall end on the center of a strip—except along the walls, where the drywall and furring abut the wall. To do this, reduce the first space by half the width of your furring (1 1/4-inches). Continue to snap chalk lines every 16 inches.

To attach a furring strip, use self-tapping concrete screws and construction adhesive. First apply a -3/8-inch bead of construction adhesive to the backside of the strip and stick the strip in place so that it aligns with the chalk line. Once the strips are in place, install screws every 12 inches. To do this, drill pilot holes through the strip, then switch to a masonry bit to drill into the concrete. Be prepared to do some shimming to level out the old surface.

Once the adhesive is dry, run a second bead of adhesive on the face of I the strips, then attach 3/8-inch drywall to the strips using 1-inch screws.

Cracked Plaster Ceiling

My plaster ceiling is cracking in several places. Can I fix it without having to recoat the entire ceiling?
As long as it is not crumbling, you can screw loose or cracked plaster back onto the wood lath behind it by using a gadget called a plaster washer. Attach a washer with a drywall screw about every 4 inches in all directions, starting at the outer edge of the loose area and working toward the center. Once the plaster is firmly reattached, hide the washers with several coats of drywall compound; then sand and paint.

If your entire ceiling is loose or if there are lots of soft spots, you're better off replacing or covering the ceiling with 3/8-inch drywall.

Fixing Damaged Texture

I have textured ceilings that are flaking, stained, and missing some texture. Is there a quick fix?
Begin by first removing any loose or marred texture with a putty knife am i priming water stains with a stain sealer. Next, mix some perlite beads (available at home centers) into your joint compound. Spread the mixture i' onto a textured roller and roll it onto the ceiling. You can apply a second coat if the patch needs more texture to match. Once the patch dries, paint the entire ceiling. Texture patches are also available in spray cans, but they are somewhat hard to control.

If you make a mistake, scrape off the material and start again. If the damaged area is larger than 2 square feet or if there are several damaged spots, consider hiring a pro to retexture the entire ceiling. You can also do this job yourself.

Small Cracks in Texture

There are some small cracks in my drywall ceiling, which is spray-textured. Can I repair them without scraping away the texture?
When your ceiling has cracks, you should first try to find out what's causing them. Most likely the house has settled or the wood ceiling joists have shrunk a little. But it's best to have it checked by a home inspector to rule out a structural problem.

Once you're sure the problem is not structural, buy a tube of white latex caulk and cut a small opening in the end of the nozzle. Squeeze just enough caulk to fill the crack. Immediately dab the caulk (it dries fast) with a damp sponge until it blends with the surrounding ceiling texture. Then paint the ceiling if necessary.
