INSTALLING CARPETING

Carpet at the Threshold

I'm recarpeting my living room. The next room has a wood floor, and there's a wood threshold in between. How do I fasten carpet to the floor at the threshold?
If the difference in height between the wood floor and the uncarpeted living room floor is more than 1/2 inch, you can safely use a tackless strip to hold the carpet down near the threshold. If the difference in height between the two floors is less than1/2 inch, you'll need to staple the carpet to the floor. First cut back the carpet pad about 1 inch from the edge of the threshold. Then tuck the edge of the carpeting under about 1 inch to cover the area that has no padding. Spread the carpet pile apart with one hand while you staple both layers of carpet into the subfloor.

Carpeting over Concrete

We want to carpet the concrete floor on our raised ranch's lower level. But when our neighbors carpeted theirs, the pad underneath rotted within 3 years. Do we need to lay a subfloor first?
Putting down a plywood floor over the concrete slab would be a lot of work for the small benefits derived. And it won't solve any moisture problem you might have; this has to be handled with proper drainage and grading on the outside of the house.
Urethane foam padding, which is readily available from carpeting suppliers, will not rot and provides fairly good insulation. Or you can buy carpeting with 1/4- or -3/8-inch-thick urethane foam backing already attached.

Choosing Carpet Pads

Which is better to use as carpet padding, waffle-shaped all-rubber padding or urethane foam? What do the weight ratings mean?
Most experts recommend a smooth-surfaced urethane foam pad, called bonded or rebound urethane. Waffle-shaped pads, usually made of latex and clay, deteriorate faster than urethane foam. Over time, waffle padding flattens out, making your carpet feel loose on the floor.

Weight rating is a measure of the density of a pad. The more it weighs, the denser it is and the better it will hold up to foot traffic. When choosing carpet pad, squeeze it between your fingers. A good-quality pad won't flatten completely and will return to its original shape as soon as you let go.

Worth Doing Yourself?

Will I save a lot if I carpet some rooms in the house myself?
Laying carpet yourself isn't a big money saver. The cost of renting the tools alone can run more than half the amount that a carpet layer might charge for a typical bedroom. But if you do it yourself, you'll have control over when the carpet is laid, the satisfaction of doing it yourself, and the know-how for future repairs.

Beginners should tackle a room less than 12 feet in width, to eliminate having to seam the carpet. I Berber carpets are a bit more difficult to work with, so you might want to I choose a different type of carpet.

Seaming Carpet

I plan to carpet a large room. How do I handle seams?
Seams are best left to a pro. But here's how it's done: Straight-cut the edges of both pieces so that they butt tightly together. Center seaming tape under the joint. Set a warm seaming iron (a rental) on top of the tape. Wait 15 to 20 seconds, then slide the iron forward almost one iron length. While the glue is hot, press the carpet down, making sure the edges meet exactly. Repeat for the length of the seam. Be careful; the iron is hot.

*Let the seaming iron rest 15 to 20 sec.; then slide it forward one length.
