How the Internet Has Changed Resumes

The Internet has added some important advantages to the resume

process. Both job seekers and employers experience a quicker turn-

around between the time a job is announced and the time in which

candidates submit resumes. Job seekers no longer need worry about

expensive career counseling and printing costs (the Internet enables

them to narrow down the number of hard copy resumes they will

print). Employers can post jobs to their own Web sites at no cost;

they can also bypass expensive recruiters and use Internet sites such

as Monster.com and Headhunter.net to increase their cost savings.

Both groups experience an extended presence in the job marketplace,

not only in the length of time a job or resume remains "active" and

visible, but also in its global reach. Now, the administrative job origi-

nally listed in your local paper may be seen by someone halfway

across the world, and he or she may be the most eligible candidate

for the job. Your competition has increased on a significant level.

Less is no longer more. Providing more information now increases

your chances of being found online, so you need to learn how to

increase its effectiveness without adding unnecessary clutter. Ac-

tion verbs are "out," and power keywords are the "hot" trend for

effective resumes. Browse through some of the online resumes to

familiarize yourself with some of the effects that work best. but be

prepared to also find some examples of how NOT to write a re-

sume. You'll quickly learn that some elements of traditional resumes,

such as full sentences, are not necessarily the best elements to use.

Many resume posting services now offer the opportunity for job

seekers to post an anonymous or "confidential" resume, in order to

protect their current job status. Prospective employers see all of the

information intended to be seen, but when they are ready to contact

the candidate, the resume service serves as the intermediary between

job seeker and employer. If you are still concerned about your present

employer learning that you are seeking a job, you may also want to

"camouflage" your resume so that your present and past employers

are not listed by name or location. Depending on the type of jobs

you have held, you may need to work even harder to hide your iden-

tity, by "disguising" some of the activities you have completed in

your work. This should not be considered dishonest (unless, of

course, you are providing inaccurate information about your past

experience!); with the ease of accessibility provided by the Internet,

most employers will understand your need for confidentiality.

Many sites can automatically contact the candidate to advise them

that a specific employer has requested contact information about

them, and the candidate decides whether or not to they wish to be

contacted by the employer. Other sites will forward the employer's

query directly to the job seeker via an alias, again leaving the matter

in the job seeker's hands. Out of common courtesy, do respond to

these services; otherwise, the employer may be left wondering

whether the automated service really forwarded their request to you.
