CREATE GREAT RESUMES AND COVER LETTERS

Nearly every job search contains three major components-

resume, cover letter, and interview. In order to success-

fully survive the job search process, you need to hone your

skills in each of these areas. Fortunately, a variety of online and

offline resources exist to help you really "wow" potential employers

First, however, you need to familiarize yourself with the basics

of these tools... and the basics have changed. In addition to provid-

ing some starting tips and advice about resumes and cover letters

the example will also teach you some special ways in which the

Internet has forever changed the dynamics of these job search tools.

Building the Perfect Resume

The resume continues to be one of the most important written docu-

ments you will use in your job search. Not only does an excellent

resume clearly communicate your qualifications to potential employ-

ers, it also focuses on what they need and how you can provide solu-

tions for them. Show how your experience can help them prepare for

a successful future.

Before venturing into the dynamics of electronic resumes take

some time to update your traditional, paper resume. It will serve as

the basis from which you develop other resumes, and you always

need to provide a classic, well-organized, nicely designed pa-

per resume during an interview. Several books provide more in-

depth coverage of resume development, and can be located through

www.impactpublications.com, your local library, or a bookstore:

Dynamite Resumes, by Ron and Caryl Krannich

The Savvy Resume Writer, by Ron and Caryl Krannich

Resume Winners from the Pros, by Wendy Enelow

Resumes for Dummies, by Joyce Lain Kennedy

Haldane's Best Resumes/or Professionals, by Bernard Haldane

Associates

The most important part of building a resume is to keep focused

on your purpose. A resume creates the opportunity for you to clearly

demonstrate to potential employers how your past performance will

affect their future. Present clear, concise examples that prove you

are the candidate who will fulfill me responsibilities of the job for

which they are hiring. In the books listed above, as well as a variety

of other sources, you will encounter three major types of resumes,

although the combination resume is most effective:

• Chronological resumes (sometimes referred to as obitu-

ary resumes) outline employment history according to dates

of employment, and show your responsibilities and titles

for each job. These resumes function most effectively for

job seekers with a progressive record of work experience,

who seek to advance within an occupational field.

• Functional resumes show patterns of skills and accom-

plishments instead of focusing on titles, employers, and

employment dates. These resumes will most appropriately

help those making a significant career change, entering the

work world for the first time, or re-entering the work world

after a long absence. They also can be useful if your work

experience does not clearly support your objective.

• Combination resumes combine the best of chronologi-

cal and functional resumes by stressing patterns of accom-

plishments and skills as well as work history. If you wish to

change to a job in a related career field, this resume pro-

vides the best choice for you.

Whatever the format, every resume should show that you are a

purposeful job seeker who has established realistic career goals that

you would like to achieve. Employers should also gain the feeling

that you will provide them with a productive, responsible worker

who will strongly benefit their organization.
