Email Resumes

If you locate an interesting job opportunity online, you may need to

send an email resume, but be careful when using this tool! Most

employers prefer NOT to receive unsolicited, emailed resumes, so

do not email your resume unless specificiaUy requested to. Why?

Computer viruses. They "infect" every computer upon which they

are run. and can interfere with the proper operations of the com-

puter and the programs it runs. Imagine your embarrassment, and

the immediate removal of your resume from consideration, if you

send a virus to a potential employer!

Essentially, the safest way to make sure that you will not embar-

rass yourself by sending a virus in ANY communications addressed

to a potential employer: install virus-protection software on your

computer, and check a reputable source for information on how to

remove viruses from your computer. Some of the top virus informa-

tion and protection resources include:

If an employer requests an email resume and you have prepared

your computer to not pass on viruses, you need to prepare your re-

sume to deliver optimal impact. If you have followed the hints listed

above concerning traditional resume preparation, you are ready to

take that ideal resume, tear it apart, and reformat it for email.

Save your resume as a text file with no formatting or as an ascii

text file. Close and reopen it to remove special formatting such as

holding, columns, graphical lines, etcetera. You should also delete

all of the bullets and replace them either with asterisks or single

dashes. Clean up large spaces left by conversion of tabs to simple

text format.

At the top, enter your name, address, phone number, and email

address and make sure they are left justified. All text (headers as

well as descriptive paragraphs!) should be flush left with a ragged

right margin. Avoid adding too many hard returns between paragraphs.

they either will not work the way you intend them or they will look

awkward, as if you are attempting to make the resume as long as

possible.

To check the formatting of the resume, either cut and paste it

(preferred) into the body of or attach it to an email message ad-

dressed to yourself. Remember to remove the following elements

because you can never be sure how they will appear in your resume's

final electronic version:

• bullets

• tabs

• boxes

• hyphenated line breaks

• special symbols, other than those you see pictured on your

keyboard

• centering

• bold

• italics

Do not forget about your keywords! Some people even include a

special keywords section on their resume.Whenever possible, use

a noun form of these words. Career-specific keywords can be found

in ads and job postings. List the qualifications, technical expertise,

industry jargon, product knowledge, and personality traits that em-

ployers are seeking within your field. Or, try looking through search

engines to see what "hot terminology" people are using!
